Where's North?

Can you find North without using a compass?
Here are two methods -
Using a Watch....
Follow these simple instructions and as long as you have an analogue watch & can see the sun you will find North!

The sun moves from East to West passing through South and at mid-day it is due South. Hold a watch flat in the palm of your hand so that the hour hand (ignore the minute hand) points to the sun. A line halfway between the hour hand and 12 o'clock will point due South (see the diagram on the left). Therefore North is in the opposite direction!

Using the stars....

The Pole star is always in the same position in the sky and the other stars appear around it. The diagram on the left shows it's position between the groups of stars. (Cassiopeia and the Plough) which can be seen quite easily on a clear night.
